One of the waves hitting schools today is anti-bullying movement. Students, teachers, administrators, and schools as a whole are becoming more aware of bulling and acting against it. But what does this actually mean for teachers? Obviously teachers can participate in the scheduled programs to make bullying more aware, but is this enough? What should, and must, teachers do concerning bullying?

As I mentioned, the easiest and smallest effort for a teacher would be to simply adhere to the different programs that a school implements. This could include spending a week watching and learning from anti-bullying videos and asking questions of the students. However, I believe that a teacher should do more than just this. In fact, there have been many cases when teachers did not do more and the end results were suicide and/or law suits.

So, what could be more important for a teacher to do? First off, a teacher could incorporate bullying policies directly into their classroom so that students realize how important you view bullying. Also, a teacher should make sure they them listen to any student who makes a claim of bullying. If someone points out the possibility of bullying, then the situation has to be checked out as soon as possible. This allows for both the bullying to be dealt with in a timely manner and for the students to notice teachers care. A last thing a teacher could do is actively look for possible bullying. Many times bullying isn't dealt with until way too late. Thus, teachers must be on the look out for any hints that bullying may be occurring.

It is my goal to incorporate these different concepts into my teaching framework. Will you as a teacher try and be the best you can be against bullying?

  1. I usually start off my school year by incorporating different bullying lessons into my daily lessons! We also had "Batman" come in this year and speak to the entire school! I feel the students need to know how important it is to not bully others!

  2. This issue is huge in schools today, and teachers and school districts must address the many challenges that come with bullying. I am glad you are going to incorporate bullying intervention into your teaching.
